Description

Open-source intelligence (OSINT) and research is a new and growing field.

The conflict in Ukraine has highlighted how the skills of online research are now becoming commonplace and integral to the media and other investigations. This one-day workshop is open to members of the public, law enforcement and investigation professionals.  It will introduce you to the research and intelligence opportunities that can be found in social media. The workshop will give the investigator the knowledge and ability to research people, companies and organisations. You will be able to use your own laptop during the sessions.

Neil Smith, OSINT Training & Research Specialist

Neil served for over 10 years as a UK police officer and went on to work as a counter-fraud specialist in a government department and as a fraud investigator for insurance companies. For nearly all of the last 20 years Neil has been a full-time investigative researcher, using only Open Source Intelligence techniques on enquiries for a mixture of clients, from insurance companies to law enforcement agencies and journalists. Neil has travelled the world teaching many hundreds, if not thousands, of investigators from law enforcement but also local authorities, insurance companies, private investigators and journalists. Neil teaches Open-Source Intelligence and runs www.uk-osint.net a website full of useful OSINT links and techniques.

Paul Heselwood, Lecturer in Forensic and Investigation Studies

After joining the police in 2001, Paul went on to become a detective in Serious and Organised Crime in the Metropolitan Police having worked in covert policing, various crime squads and the intelligence bureau.
