 Purpose and content of trip:

This five-day field trip around zoos in the Netherlands will provide you with the opportunity to compare and contrast four very different Dutch zoos: Rotterdam, Apenheul, Amersfoort and Burgers. The trip forms the foundation of the Zoos and Zoo Animal Management module. By comparing and contrasting the exhibits and observing how visitors and animals interact with them you’ll gain a first-hand understanding of zoo exhibit design. You will then explore this knowledge further when we return to Cambridge. The trip forms the basis for the main coursework assignment where you are asked to demonstrate your understanding of zoo exhibit design by designing an exhibit for your chosen species. The trip provides you with a wealth of examples to draw on from your own experience. The video-based presentation where you explain your exhibit design forms the main coursework task for the module. The exercise is an integral part of the field trip and has been designed to ensure that you get the most out of your time at the Dutch zoos. That said, you will still have plenty of time to explore each zoo at your own leisure.
