Sheep Husbandry - An Introduction

Join our introductory course if you are considering or have just started keeping sheep. It's a combination of lectures and practical sessions held one evening a week for six weeks.

Course Description

You'll learn:

  • Sheep breeds
  • The British sheep industry and the annual production cycle
  • Basic sheep behaviour and handling
  • Lambing and lamb tasks
  • Care of the pregnant and lactating ewe
  • Basic sheep health care (including worming, vaccinations, foot trimming and body condition scoring)
  • Basic sheep nutrition
  • Signs of ill health and disease
  • Animal welfare and legislation

When you complete this course we will issue you a certificate of attendance.

Free parking is available on campus in Writtle: we'll issue a permit to you and ask that it's clearly displayed in your vehicle. Please bring your own refreshments.
